What to Expect at a Nicaraguan Surf Camp
What to Expect at a Nicaragua Surf Camp
By Popoyo Surf Lodge | popoyosurflodge.com
So you’ve decided to book a surf trip to Nicaragua. Smart move. Nicaragua has quietly become one of the best surf destinations in Central America — consistent waves, warm water, uncrowded breaks, and a raw, authentic energy that’s hard to find anywhere else. But if it’s your first time at a Nicaragua surf camp, you probably have questions. Here’s what to expect.
A Truly Hassle-Free Experience
From the moment you land in Managua, PSL takes care of everything. Airport transfer, accommodations, meals, 4×4 trucks, boats, guides — it’s all handled. You don’t need to rent a car, figure out where to eat, source a board, or spend your vacation researching which beach to go to. We’ve been doing this since 1999 and we’ve thought of everything so you don’t have to.
The goal is simple: you show up, and we do the rest. All you need to focus on is surfing.
The Waves
Nicaragua’s Pacific coast offers an incredible variety of surf breaks — beach breaks, reef breaks, point breaks, and outer reefs — all within reach. At Popoyo Surf Lodge, we give guests access to more than 14 world-class breaks via boat or 4×4 truck. Whether you’re a beginner looking for a gentle, rolling wave to learn on or an experienced surfer searching for a fast, barreling beach break, the waves here deliver.
Surf is consistent year-round. From December through March, swells tend to be smaller — ideal for beginners and intermediates. From late spring through summer, bigger south swells roll in, giving experienced surfers some of the best waves of their lives.
Your Surf Guide — and Why It Matters
This is where PSL is genuinely different. Our surf guides are locals — born and raised in this region, surfing these waters their entire lives. Most of our guides have been guiding for 10 years or more. They don’t just know where the breaks are; they know how each one behaves on every tide, every swell direction, and every time of year.
That local knowledge matters more than people realize. In surfing, respect in the lineup is earned — and our guides have it. When you paddle out with a PSL guide, you’re not an outsider dropping into a local break. You’re with someone the local surf community knows and respects. That changes the entire experience. Sessions are smoother, more relaxed, and you get better waves.
For beginners, your guide is also your instructor. They’re in the water with you — watching your technique, reading waves alongside you, and helping you improve every session. For beginners, lessons start on the beach covering balance, paddling, and how to pop up. By mid-week, most first-timers are riding waves on their own.
Food, Accommodation & the Rest
PSL’s all-inclusive packages cover everything — airport transfers, three fresh meals a day prepared in our kitchen, comfortable casitas with AC and private baths, purified water, and Wi-Fi powered by our full-camp generator (the only one in the area). You land in Managua and we handle everything else.
When you’re not in the water, there’s no shortage of things to do. Tide pools, hot springs, local bars, and some of the most beautiful sunsets you’ll ever see are all right here.
Why Nicaragua?
Nicaragua is still one of the most authentic surf destinations left in Central America. It hasn’t been overdeveloped. The people are warm, the country is stunning, and the waves are world-class. Popoyo Surf Lodge has been here since 1999 — we were the first surf camp in Nicaragua, back when almost no one knew this coastline existed. We’ve seen the surf scene grow from nothing into a global destination, and we’ve been proud to be part of that story.
If you’re thinking about a surf trip to Nicaragua, we’d love to have you.
