The Best Time of Year to Surf in Nicaragua
The Best Time of Year to Surf in Nicaragua
By Popoyo Surf Lodge | popoyosurflodge.com
One of the most common questions we get at Popoyo Surf Lodge is: “When is the best time to surf in Nicaragua?” We’ve been surfing these waters since 1999, so here’s the honest, straight-from-the-source answer.
Nicaragua Surf Season — The Real Breakdown
Nicaragua has two distinct surf seasons, and they offer very different experiences. Knowing which one suits you is the key to planning the right trip.
April through September — Peak Surf Season
This is when Nicaragua really turns on. From April through September, consistent overhead swells roll in from the south, producing powerful, fast, and exciting waves across all of our breaks. This is the season serious surfers plan their trips around.
The waves during these months are best suited for intermediate to experienced surfers who are comfortable in bigger surf and can handle some power. At PSL, our local guides know exactly which breaks are firing on any given day — and with 14+ world-class waves within reach, there’s always something incredible on offer.
One thing that sets PSL apart during peak season: five 4×4 trucks, two boats, and 5 seasoned surf guides! With our transport and access to 14+ breaks, our guides take guests away from the more crowded spots and find the waves that are working best on any given day. You’re not stuck at one break fighting for waves — you’re moving, exploring, and surfing with a guide who knows exactly where to go. If you’re searching for the best waves of your life, this is your window.
September and November — Not to Be Overlooked
September and November are months that deserve more attention than they get. Sitting on either side of our October closure, these are transition months that quietly deliver some of the most consistent and enjoyable surf of the year — with fewer people in the water.
September sits at the tail end of peak season, still delivering quality surf with a slightly more relaxed vibe. November marks the beginning of the dry season transition — clean conditions, offshore winds, and waves that work for a wide range of skill levels. Both months are seriously underrated.
October — PSL is Closed
We close in October. Onshore winds and heavy rains make for poor surf conditions, and it’s simply not the right time to be at the lodge. We use this time to rest, recharge, and prepare for the upcoming season. If you’re planning a trip, October is the one month to avoid.
December through March — Best for Beginners (and Great for Everyone)
The dry season runs from December through March, and this is hands down the best time of year to learn to surf in Nicaragua. Smaller, cleaner, well-shaped waves combined with offshore winds and sunny skies create near-perfect conditions for beginners and those looking to improve their technique.
This is the only window when PSL offers our Beginner’s Surf Package — and it’s no coincidence. The breaks around Popoyo during these months are some of the finest learning waves in all of Central America.
But don’t let “beginner season” fool you — experienced surfers love December through March too. For surfers from the US, Canada, and Europe looking to escape a cold winter, Nicaragua in the dry season is a dream. The waves are fun, the weather is beautiful, and there’s no better place to be in February than surfing warm water under blue skies.
Water Temperature
The water in Nicaragua is warm year-round — between 77–84°F (25–29°C). The water in Nicaragua is warm for most of the year, but from December through March it can feel cooler — particularly in the early mornings. We recommend a wetsuit top during these months, and not just for warmth. For beginners especially, a wetsuit top protects your stomach and ribs as you get used to lying on a surfboard. It makes a real difference during those first few sessions. The rest of the year, boardshorts and a rash guard are all you need.
So When Should You Come?
Beginner or learning to surf? Book December through March — the best conditions, and our Beginner’s Surf Package is available.
Experienced surfer chasing serious waves? Come April through September — overhead swells, powerful surf, and an incredible week in the water.
Want great waves with fewer crowds? September and November are your sweet spots.
Escaping a cold winter and want fun surf and sunshine? December through March is perfect — warm water, clean waves, and no snow in sight.
Whatever brings you to Nicaragua, PSL has been doing this since 1999. We’ll make sure you’re on the right wave at the right time.
