At Popoyo Surf Lodge, we offer our Beginner Surf Package exclusively from December through March — and we get asked about this all the time. The short answer? It’s 100% about you, the client.

Nicaragua is home to some of the best surf breaks in Central America, but most of them are not suited for beginner lessons. Many surf camps and hotels in the area offer lessons year-round, but we don’t believe the conditions during late spring and summer are ideal — or safe — for creating a truly successful first surf experience.

Why December Through March Is the Sweet Spot

December marks the beginning of Nicaragua’s dry season, and with it, the powerful south swells of summer begin to settle down. This opens up a much wider range of surf breaks that are perfect for learning — waves that are fun, manageable, and safe for beginners. Breaks that would be off-limits during the bigger swell months become accessible, giving our clients variety and progression throughout the week.

With the new coastal highway now complete, we’re able to take our clients to a wide variety of world-class waves all within a 30-mile radius.
